Day 10 - Spider Brooch

Acrylic on Board 16cm x 16cm

This is a beloved little spider brooch I wore a lot as a child. The coating of the fake pearls is wearing off a bit in places but it still looks pretty good. I just realised recently that my spider  only has 6 legs!
Maybe it's not a spider after all!

  1. amazing job on these shiny pearls and brooch Wendy. I also like how you off-centered the image

    1. Thanks so much Sally! I had planned to off-centre it, but I went a BIT further than planned as I had intended all it's legs to make it onto the board.

  2. I wonder how old your lovely brooch is? In pre 1930s jewellery and back to Victorian times the symbolism of a spider in jewellery meant wisdom and prudence.

    1. Hi Rosemary, your question made me realise that I had never thought of my spider's origins. I just always remembered having it. I asked my mum and she said that she remembers buying it for herself as a teenager - probably in 1955.
I like that pre 1930s symbolism!

  4. This is pretty! I find jewelry very hard to sketch with all the narrow sections. You did a great job!!!

In answer to your question about a "tailgate party" here is a link to wikipedia's answer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tailgate_party (I don't know if the link will show.) Simply put it is a party/gathering of groups of people usually before a sports event. People put down the tailgates on their trucks and pull out coolers of food and drinks, and maybe a barbecue for a party.

    1. Thanks so much Joan! Thanks for the explanation of the tailgate party too. I guessed it was probably something like that but just hadn't heard the expression before. Sounds like a lot of fun!

  6. Like it, like the composition too. I guess you added the other 2 legs to the painting?
Keep painting... Keep painting... ( I think I owed you one, missed it on last comment)

    1. Thanks David! No there are only three legs. What you are seeing is the back of the brooch that goes under the fabric when it is pinned on.
Thanks for my extra "keep painting" :) - you too!

  8. This is a lovely and very well done painting! And I do think your abstract work is lively and the colors are lovely together. Hope you go on with more....

    1. You are very kind Debra! You are particularly kind about the abstracts. The jury is still out on those as to whether or not I will pursue them further.
