Day Three - The V & A

I haven't had a chance to get sketching on location this week, so with my last two sketches I've turned to the photos from my UK trip for inspiration. This one is a scene from my visit to the Victoria and Albert museum in London. What a mind blowing place it is! I was itching to sketch while I was there that day but unfortunately I didn't get the opportunity due to time constraints. I felt green with envy when I passed a whole posse of sketchers staked out amongst the statues in one of the galleries.

I am continuing with the approach of sketching directly in ink, and as you can see, I have made some real clangers. The marble column was fattened and tapered belatedly and also the middle statue had to be drawn over the background that had been done precipitously and over zealously. However, as I've said before, it makes it so much more fun and less inhibiting to work this way. In fact, I doubt I would even have attempted such a busy scene as this prior to using this approach.

  2. Nice! Very nice! Love ink! No pencil needed! I haven't used pen and ink since college! Way back in the day! Great energy! Wonderful perspective! Fun scene! You use this medium very well Wendy! I think fun is so much better than work. They call them "funs of art" instead of "works of art!" Bravo Mate! And again, Welcome home!

    1. Thanks Michael! I used to have a passion for pen and ink so it is nice to revisit it. Sorry this is such a short response will do better soon - very tired at the moment - lots of visits to see Dad in Hospital.

  3. Wendy - this is great - I think there is nothing like pen and ink. Yes it is easy to make mistakes but the spontaneity is so refreshing. Think you really captured the essence of this place.

  4. Great ink sketch! I think we are too aware of the slight mistakes we make in our own ink sketches, but the rest of the world doesn't notice. It is the impression the sketch makes that appeals to people. I am still trying to sketch a bit directly in ink, but would hesitate at a scene as complicated as this.
