30 Sketches in 30 Days

A couple of days ago I thought I'd have to go back and scan all these sketches after discovering at the 11th hour that scanning would eradicate the grey/brown hue of the paper in the photographed versions. However, I was a puddle of exhaustion today so I went with what I already had. The one scan I did at the very end now stands out in a ridiculous manner amongst what I like to now think of as my sepia toned work. But I have come to quite enjoy less than perfect  outcomes. They tell the warts-and-all story of the evolution of things rather than trying to gloss over the shortcomings at the end. Am I rambling? Yes, I thought so! That's one of the side-effects of these 30 day challenges!

Thanks so much to everyone who has left comments and offered words of support and encouragement throughout the month. I'm sorry I haven't responded to all the comments, I will endeavour to lift my game!!! See all the other collages on Leslie Saeta's blog by clicking here.

I really enjoyed all the sketches you did for the challenge. It was a great idea and they stood out from all the others. After 30 of them you can do them in your sleep! So congratulations and I look forward to seeing whats coming next in Wendy's Art World

  10. Wow Wendy you have been busy. So much to catch up on. Loved seeing your fabulous challenge. Well done you for achieving your goal. I could not be so disciplined in producing something of your calibre every day. I'm ignoring your warts and all comment as I didn't see any warts... lol. All I saw was your fabulous drawing skill that I remember seeing in your en plain air work in London. Hasn't time gone so quickly already? I loved your post on hugging the tree in Glastonbury. You would definitely have fitted in with the locals. I do remember you saying you had a fetish for trees. I do too but I stop at painting them rather than hugging them. You never know what might be crawling up them lol. Anyway I will catch up with you again soon and thanks for leaving your lovely comments too. It really is a shame there is so much distance between us. Take care. xx

    1. Hi Laura, thanks for your very lovely comments. Yes it does seem like a long time since meeting you in London. Sigh! What a great day that was! It is a shame we are so far away from each other.
It has been such a pleasure to see your prolific and experimental output from your Scottish adventure. You must be thrilled with what you are achieving! xx

So nice on so many levels! Now take a little break and please bring on your ever so colorful paintings from the beautiful land Down Under! Take care Wendy!

    1. Michael, as ever your comments are balm for the soul! I always appreciate your enthusiastic comments and compliments! I have missed sketching since the challenge but needed a break. I hope to get back to my acrylics again soon too. I think I will try to keep up with both on a regular basis. Sketching is rather addictive.

    1. You are very kind Katherine! Thanks so much for your interest and encouragement.
I find the challenge format works very well for me as it gives me a reason to push through the inertia that can so often get in the way of things. Not only that, it was a great distraction from what has been a very difficult and stressful time for our family with my father being hospitalised. The creative process has a magical effect on my mood as I'm sure it does for every artist. It transports me into the present moment which offers a brief reprieve from the stress. I also found that the daily sketching allowed my skills to improve quickly and at times I was quite surprised (pleasantly) with what came out of my pen. My self-imposed criteria of going straight in with pen was unbelievably liberating. While it didn't deliver the level of accuracy I usually feel compelled to achieve when it comes to perspective and detail, I think my work was far more vibrant because of it. It was quite the revelation! I realised that being less obsessive over "getting it right" made it so much easier to dive straight in to a sketch without over thinking things to the point where it might not get started at all. Not starting at all has been a common outcome in the past.
Thanks for encouraging me to put my reflections down in writing Katherine, I always enjoy reading about the thinking processes that go on behind the scenes of your stunning work.

  15. Wendy, I am finally home from my trip and am able to post again. I did view a few of your sketches while I was away but it was too hard to post from the device I was using. Wow!!! I just went through your month of posts. You did an awesome job on the 30 sketches!!! My favorites are your grandmother's colander and the ones of the motorcycle. Congrats on finishing!

    1. Thanks so much Joan! It is great to have you back and to see what you got up to in Italy. I have only had time so far to have a quick look at your blog but what I have seen is GOBSMACKING! Your blog was a huge inspiration to me to take up sketching when I went to the UK in July and now I am addicted to sketching on location! I can see how and why you sketch every day now!
My Grandma's colander is one of my favourites too!

I hope to post very soon with oodles of flower photos I've taken this past month or so. Oh yes, the flower you enquired about in a previous post was a grevillea. There are hundreds of different types over here and the birds love them!
