Day 9 - Tortoise Shell Sunnies

Acrylic on board 16cm x 16cm

I was drawn to this photo of my daughter because of her lovely tortoiseshell sunglasses catching the sun. I intended to paint in my usual tight manner but at the last minute decided to use bold brushstrokes and not worry about getting things too realistic colour-wise. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and although I lost the plot by trying way too hard to get her face right, I felt I had loosened up from my usual style overall.

  1. Oh Wendy, I am having trouble keeping up! But then again you are posting everyday! Duh on me it's the 30 Day Challenge!
Nice portrait here, very relaxed and natural so I think you got the manner right and no I don't think you lost the plot on her face.
I do remember those hair bobbles because I wore them. They were all over our house growing up so I do have my own memories of them. Of course I was always shooting them across the room, ha ha!

I like this shiny theme of yours. It is a great way to tie the whole challenge together. The cropped-in sunglasses might be my favorite so far, but a tough call. We'll see what else you come up with before day 30!
Stay clear of the wildfires. If I could send some of our rain I would. ; )

    1. I really appreciate all your comments David - thank you! I can just imagine you flicking those bobbles around, to your sisters' disapproval I'm sure!:)

The bushfires have been terrible with a whole town destroyed and a couple of deaths. The fires are still raging and are tonight threatening a larger town. Just awful! It is horrible that you have the same fire issues in California. We could certainly do with some of those trillions of gallons you've been getting over there!
      Love your pen sketches!

    2. ...oops, I guess you figured out I meant to say "...hair bobbles BUT NOT because I wore them..." ha ha! oh well!

And you are right I did flick them and had many sore fingers because of it! Back then I did not care too much for my sisters approval of course. : /

  3. love the loose brushstrokes, and great that you had some fun as that is what it's all about isn't it? quite a beautiful little painting, especially nice on the glasses. I missed out on my painting yesterday, was just way too much other stuff on for me.

  4. Thanks so much Sally! Yes, it's better if it's fun. Can't say it always is though - sometimes it feels like hard work. Not today though, it took around three and a half hours but it felt like half an hour. Lovely when in the zone!
Yes, some days it's tricky to fit a painting in, that's why I'm always after the elusive "quick" subject matter. It doesn't seem to exist but I keep trying. Although, if I could paint looser I'd be much quicker. Today I almost achieved it - if I hadn't been trying to get a likeness with today's portrait then it would have been a doddle. Good luck with today's painting! Absolutely love the last one you did.
