The Sunset Backup

The days seem to be passing too quickly of late to find time to do a weekly painting. But I don't like to let moss grow on the post button, so I thought I'd post these photos I took last night of the stunning sunset over the Indian Ocean. Of course these images taken on an automatic setting are mere finger paintings compared to the real thing.

Soaking up a lovely ocean sunset was a fitting way to end the day after having finished reading a fantastic memoir that was set on the ocean - albeit the Pacific. Love With A Chance Of Drowning was one of the most entertaining books I've read in a long time.

  1. I'll have to look for that book. I always like to hear a real person's opinion of a book before I read it! This ocean scene is breathtaking. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be there in person! I don't blame you for not painting, you're soaking up the ambiance of the place!

    1. Hi Katherine, I think it was being released in the US a few days ago. I would love to hear what you think of it if you do end up reading it sometime.

  2. G'Day Wendy!
Great photos! So very fortunate to live by the ocean, The Indian Ocean at that!
    Ahhh!
    Wondrous!
The ocean is certainly one of my favorite things. Maybe even my favorite!
Now, I am wondering will be lucky enough to have a painting of this beautiful scene?

    1. G'day Michael!
Yes we are both lucky to live by the sea on our respective sides of the planet. They all have their distinctive charms. Some days the colours here are very tropical. When in the aqua blue shallows(I dare not venture further these days!) you could imagine that when turning back to land you would be greeted with the sight of swaying coconut trees instead of the grey saltbush and limestone outcrops - which is also very beautiful but in a different more arid way.
I LOVE your ocean paintings! You are the king of the waves!
      Happy painting!

    1. Thanks Hilje, Yes the colours were unbelievable but it is impossible to catch them in their true glory with a photograph. I must make an effort to enjoy the sunsets more regularly but I'm often in the middle of making dinner at that time now that the days are getting shorter. It was only luck that I happened to see it the other day when driving home from dropping my daughter somewhere so I grabbed my camera and hotfooted it down to the beach.

    1. Thanks so much Sally. I hope you enjoy the book if you get to read it. We could have a book club discussion amongst us all! I guess your sunsets happen very late in summer being so far North?

    1. Hi Celia,
I hope you enjoy the book if you get a hold of it. I also love reading books about people uprooting and living in different cultures - there is a great book called "Almost French" about an Australian woman who goes to live in Paris. Have you ever thought about writing about your own experiences of moving to a new country? I'd be first in line for a copy!!

  6. Pure bliss to the eyes , wonderful and calm ! When you paint you don't have the time to read, so I guess it is a good thing to take a pause from creating and grab a book.

    1. Thank you Jane! Yes, I did enjoy squeezing in a book to read over the weekend. Reading is another of my passions. I can't go too long without a good book or I begin to feel twitchy. I find that escaping into a book is a great way to keep stress at bay.

    2. Jane, I meant to say to you too that it would be interesting to hear about your experiences of moving to Italy as well. It has such a fascinating and enriching culture.
